I got my first ukulele as a birthday present in 2010 and I love playing it! I’ve played guitar before, but the ukulele is simpler (has less strings), is much more portable, and just feels like the right size for me!
There are four different sizes – soprano (standard), concert, tenor, and baritone (which is tuned like a guitar.) Really nice ukuleles can cost up to a thousand+! Below are some nice ukuleles to start with. You may want to go to a music store and try them out first.
Tenor ukulele
The tenor has more frets than a soprano and is used by professional ukulele players (which has made them more popular recently.)
Kala Makala Tenor Ukulele Starter Pack This set comes with a tuner and bag and is the first uke I owned. I like it! 🙂 |
Lanikai LU-21T Tenor Ukulele Lanikai is another good brand which costs just a little more than the previous Kala. |
Lanikai NK-T Custom Series Koa Tenor Ukulele A much nicer tenor ukulele. |
Kala Tenor Ukulele Gig Bag A soft bag for your ukulele to provide some protection. |
Other sizes
The soprano is the traditional, standard size, and it is also the smallest. Some people find the soprano too small for their fingers. It fits well for kids though! The concert size is just 2 inches smaller than the tenor ukulele in length.
Kala Makala Soprano Ukulele Pack The soprano is the standard size and the smallest. Good for kids! Some adults might find it too small for their fingers. Kala Makala Concert Ukulele Pack The concert size is just 2 inches smaller than the tenor ukulele in length. |
Kala Makala Soprano Pineapple Styled Ukulele This one has a different shape – it’s shaped like a pineapple! You might like the look of this one more. Lanikai LU-21P Pineapple Ukulele Rosewood Fretboard Another good starter ukulele. It’s a little pricier than the Kala Makala equivalent. |
